The Ellen Auerbach Fellowship for outstanding young international photography 2023 is to be awarded to Joanna Piotrowska. In her black and white silver gelatine prints and 16mm films, the Polish artist deals with topics such as family, home, intimacy and the position of women. Berlin Art Prize – Jubilee Endowment 1848/1948

Following the rotation of the six sections of the Akademie der Künste, this year the Grand Art Prize Berlin is to be awarded in the Film and Media Arts Section and goes to Norwegian film director and screenwriter Joachim Trier. The prizes will be presented by Senator for Culture and Europe, Klaus Leder, and Akademie President Jeanine Meerapfel. The other six art prizes go to Petrit Halilaj, Xu Tiantian, Joanna Bailie, Barbi Marković, Marcel Kohler and Nelly Quettier. In German and English.  more

“State of SoundS” gives an insight into the work of the UdK master’s programme “Sound Studies and Sonic Arts” under the direction of Daisuke Ishida. With installations, performances and interventions, the foyers of the Akademie on Hanseatenweg will become a place of listening. The students are interested in the interdisciplinary approach to the world of sound, the intertwining of theoretical study and creative work: thinking with the ears, making culture audible.  more

KULA Compagnie: Journals of Exile

Journals of Exile focuses on 14 years of exile of the collective including Bertolt Brecht, Helene Weigel, Asja Lacis, Hella Wuolijoki and others. Hours after the Reichstag fire, they had to embark on a flight, fighting isolation and political impotence through the means of art. For the play, KULA Compagnie collaborates with artists from the Afghan Simorgh Theatre. Performances each day at 8 pm. In German, Hebrew and Persian with German and English surtitles.  more

The Heinrich Mann Prize 2023 goes to the Hungarian author, historian and translator György Dalos. From the jury statement: “His work spans a wide range from the division of Europe to the collapse of the Soviet Union to the project of an illiberal democracy in his home country Hungary. Anyone who reads György Dalos not only gains new insights into contemporary European history — but into the entire genealogy of the present”.
