Akademie der Künste is Partner to Berlin’s Videoart at Midnight Festival ’18

The international forum Videoart at Midnight (VAM), dedicated to fostering film, media and video art in Berlin, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary in December 2018. The VAM Festival is accompanied by four exhibitions, in addition to a two-day screening of artists' films and videos at the Kino Babylon (15–16 Dec.) as well as an international symposium (13–14 Dec.) at Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin on the history, present and future of video art. To mark the occasion the Akademie der Künste is showing original works from Wulf Herzogenrath's video art archive for the first time that will be presented at the Hanseatenweg venue from 13–16 December.

As an art historian and curator, Wulf Herzogenrath – Akademie member and a previous director of the Kunsthalle Bremen for many years – decisively contributed to the establishment of video art in Germany, especially from 1973 to 1989, when he was director of the Kölnischer Kunstverein (Cologne Art Association). In addition to documentation on video art, the exhibition at the Akademie der Künste also includes some early video works, accompanied by photos, letters and installation designs from the exceptional study collection in the Herzogenrath Archive. The focus of this review is on documenta 6 – a milestone in the history of media art – for which Herzogenrath curated a new, independent section of video art in 1977. Herzogenrath's collection of artist's guestbooks, with original dedications that are living testimonies to his numerous professional as well as private encounters since the late 1960s, are now making their public debut. A discussion at the opening of the Herzogenrath Archive on 12 December, with Ulrike Rosenbach and art historian Franziska Stöhr (moderation), will kick off the symposium that is part of the Videoart at Midnight Festival.
