DISKURSE
Lectures and discussions on the Future of Europe with Claus Leggewie, Gesine Schwan, Rita Süssmuth, Chantal Mouffe et al.

First lecture by migrant expert Jochen Oltmer
Sunday, 16 Oct 2016, noon, Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg

The lecture by migration expert Jochen Oltmer kicks off the DISKURSE series of lectures and discussions, a cooperation of the Akademie der Künste and the German Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb). Accompanying the exhibition “Uncertain States. Artistic Strategies in States of Emergency” the lectures address today's key issues. Europe is facing challenges such as xenophobia, Islamophobia and anti-Semitism. Thirteen prominent representatives of migration studies, political science, sociology, philosophy, and art scholarship discuss questions like: What are the causes of this new fundamentalism? How can the growth of right-wing populism and racism be curbed and overcome? How can immigration policies be improved? And what role does art have to play in coping with the crisis?

Jochen Oltmer conducts research on migration and is board member of the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) at the University of Osnabrück. In his lecture “Migration und Flucht: Die Vergangenheit der Gegenwart” (in German language), Oltmer will clarify the voluntary and forced migration through the historical lens, i.e. how both have been integral parts of the world’s history and how they have evolved over time.

The lectures will be accompanied and commented on by the young team from Polis180, the grassroots think tank for foreign and European policy. The emerging international scholars will challenge the established experts with critical questions in order to stimulate a dynamic exchange of perspectives.
The audio files of the series will be available online at www.adk.de.
