Myths – Bauhauses – Dogmas
Symposium with panels discussions, a play reading, and a reception
24th and 25th May, Pariser Platz

This year, the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus is being celebrated as if it invented modernity by itself. The energy which the members of the Bauhaus expended to work on their own myth ranks among their astounding achievements. What the Bauhaus was surely better able to accomplish than many other commendable art schools were advertising, public relations, exhibitions, publications, events – work on the brand image.

Members of the Akademie and guests of the Visual Arts and Architecture Sections are taking the anniversary year as an opportunity to discuss the Bauhaus in an appreciating as well as critical manner. The symposium “Myths – Bauhauses – Dogmas”, organised into four programme parts, attempts to classify the Bauhaus from the perspective of the present. The first part discusses the unique attribute of the Bauhaus compared with other creative schools and centres of the time. The second thematic block reflects upon the national and international reception of the Bauhaus and its impact, while the third one sheds light on criticisms and new approaches. In the last programme item, culture professionals working at the intersection of architecture, design, art, and society today, speak on the relevance of the Bauhaus for their own work. In a play reading, texts by Anni and Josef Albers from their time at Black Mountain College (1933–1949) are presented.

With Hubertus von Amelunxen, Arno Brandlhuber, Winfried Brenne, Jean-Louis Cohen, Arnold Dreyblatt, Werner Durth, Thomas Flierl, Matthias Flügge, Konstantin Gricic, Birgit Hein, Wulf Herzogenrath, Ulrike Lorenz, Olaf Nicolai, Wolfgang Pehnt, Karin Sander, Matthias Sauerbruch, Vladimír Šlapeta, Philip Ursprung and VA Wölfl
