Ich war neunzehn

Film Screening

The DEFA films Die Russen kommen and Ich war neunzehn were both made in 1968. In them, the directors Heiner Carow and Konrad Wolf each process their experiences during the final days of the war. One of them grew up in Germany, the other in Soviet emigration. Carow was not permitted to finish his film, as it lacked an anti-fascist protagonist. Wolf, who invaded the country of his childhood with the Red Army, often examined the relationship of the Germans to the “Russians”. What are the historical images that shape today's discourse?

At 5:30 pm, the film Die Russen kommen will be shown, followed by a talk with historian Götz Aly and screenwriter Wolfgang Kohlhaase.
