Choreographer Lia Rodrigues, director Rabih Mroué, director Milo Rau and the writer and director Wajdi Mouawad discussed the challenges of global art production in conversation with Martin Valdés-Stauber.  Can there be a global art? When does a global approach (such as Schlingensief's Operndorf Afrika or Milo Rau's Orestes in Mosul) participate in neo-colonial formations of a self-righteous, Eurocentric concept of art? How can artists use their privileged position in the service of global solidarity? Artistic strategies can frame already existing activism and make it more visible. And yet the preconditions and manifestations of global solidarity always carry internal contradictions: who contributes the relevant experiential knowledge? Whose struggle is at stake and how can it be efficiently supported? Who uses the images of artistic interventions, and whom do they benefit?
