Hannes Hoelzl

Hannes Hoelzl is an experimental musician and sound artist, researcher in hybrid music systems, and academic teacher. He studied Sound & Music Technology in Graz and Utrecht, and lives in Berlin, working in various artistic areas revolving around the central theme of sound: live computer music, installation, composition, spatial sound, development and hacking of musical software and hardware.


He regularly works in teams with other artists in the fields of Jazz and New Music as well as in sound and media arts. He appears both in regular ensembles (TrioBrachiale, PowerBooks_UnPlugged, earweego, Institut für Sonoaviatik), and in free formations, e.g. with Frank Köllges, Andres Bosshard, hans w. koch, Yan Jun, or Mario de Vega. Apart from his international concert activity, his installation works have been shown at the Venice Biennale of Architecture, manifesta7, ZKM Karlsruhe, and in the Millennium Dome in Beijing, amongst others. His teaching activities have taken him to numerous academic institutions, from the Wesleyan Academy (CT/USA) and the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo to the Geidai University, Tokyo. Currently, Hannes is assistant professor at Berlin University of the Arts.
