Helga Paris, Photographer

Exhibition

With around 275 photographs, the exhibition of Helga Paris at the Akademie der Künste is the photographer's most comprehensive to date. With a background in modernist painting, theatre and poetry as well as early Soviet, Italian and French cinema, Paris has spent the last four and a half decades developing an extensive oeuvre of delicate, nuanced black-and-white photography. It is the first retrospective of Paris' work in Berlin in 25 years.

Far from the centres of the art world, Timm Ulrichs works tirelessly as a self-appointed 'total artist' in a wide range of genres. His oeuvre comprises conceptual work, object art, environments, performances, multimedia work and concrete poetry. The exhibition “Weiter im Text”, which takes place on the occasion of the Käthe Kollwitz Prize 2020, explores his artistic notion of the end of the sayable and unsayable with a selection of expansive works, prints, objects and films. Exhibition opening & award ceremony: 23 Jan 2020.

Arnold Dreyblatt: REPERTOIRE

Arnold Dreyblatt's multimedia installation REPERTOIRE (2016) is based on the history of the Akademie der Künste: data related to some 2,500 members since the institution's founding in 1696. Dreyblatt innovatively restructures this information to emphasize the international community of artists who have always contributed to further developing the art of their times.

Heiner Müller’s discovery of America 1975/76–1978

Heiner Müller travelled the American continent with Ginka Cholakova in 1975/76, and again in 1978. His observations of American society are reflected in a variety of texts; impressions of inequality and violence as well as the overwhelming experience of the landscape became material that shaped his dramatic language. The symposium examines the topicality of Müller’s view of America. Robert Wilson starts by reporting on their collaboration. Welcome: Nele Hertling. In German and English.

Heiner Müller’s discovery of America 1975/76–1978

In 1975/76, and again in 1978,  Heiner Müller travelled the American continent with Ginka Cholakova. Artistic impulses from his travels were the beginning of Heiner Müller's later worldwide success. With reports, films, readings and conversations, the symposium traces the chronology of these journeys while at the same time allowing for a new voyage of discovery into the interior of the work. In doing so, it examines the topicality of Müller’s view of America. With Hermann Beyer, Thomas Heise, Jürgen Holtz, Dieter Montag, Ginka Cholakova et al. In German and English.

Ultraschall Berlin.
Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and Maja Ratkje

The concert for one or more soloists and an orchestra is a genre that renews itself time and time again and from which composers constantly gain new facets. The Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin presents three very different types of “concert” at the 2020 Ultraschall festival. For composer and vocal virtuoso Maja Ratkje, who has been a member of the Akademie since 2017, it is about nothing less than “changing the world”. In addition: world premieres of Marko Nikodijević and Gordon Kampe and a work by Francesca Verunelli.

The Long Shadow of the Middle of the Century.
An Evening for Tomas Venclova

The shadow cast by the middle of the last century has preoccupied the great Lithuanian poet Tomas Venclova throughout his life: “To the same extent that history was nightmarish, literature was great. The only realities in this unreal time were the murdered writers.” Venclova talks to Ellen Hinsey and Durs Grünbein about the consolation of poetry in dark times, the misery of exile and his contribution to the current issue of Sinn und Form. Moderation: Matthias Weichelt. In German and English.
