From 26 January 2022, the transmediale Festival is staging the exhibition “abandon all hope ye who enter here” at the Akademie der Künste on Hanseatenweg. The show, together with the symposium “This is Not Anarchy, This is Chaos” at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (28 – 29 January), concludes the 2021-22 holding of the transmediale festival “for refusal”. The press preview of the exhibition will take place on 25 January 2022 at 11 am with Nora O Murchú, artistic director of transmediale, and Lorena Juan, exhibition curator, as well as participating artists. On the opening day, the exhibition will be open from 6 pm to midnight with free admission.

Quoting a phrase from Dante Alighieri’s Inferno in its title, the exhibition questions technology’s polished image and its seamless integration into our everyday lives. Nine artists and collectives examine the damage caused by the increasing dominance of algorithms and computer logics: from resource exploitation and climate-damaging consumerism to the manic pursuit of negative news in doomscrolling and false technological promises to the persistence of colonial mind-sets. The works on show lend shape to the strange realities and toxic side-effects concealed beneath the surface of shiny interfaces and inside algorithmic black boxes. The focus is on the question of what scope for refusal to cooperate remains in a computer-controlled world.
The show’s centrepiece is the work Entanglement by the Irish collective Annex. The five-metre-high sculpture visualises how data production and consumption change the physical landscape. The work was first presented in the Irish pavilion at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale.

With works by
Annex, Ibiye Camp, Cihad Caner, Tianzhuo Chen, Stine Deja, Constant Dullaart, Lo-Def Film Factory, Alaa Mansour and The Underground Division

The exhibition is also accessible digitally via the Proxy Visits program. Visitors are linked to a guide at the Akademie der Künste via video call and thus experience the exhibition collectively and interactively.

“abandon all hope ye who enter here” is a project by transmediale e.V. at the Akademie der Künste, Berlin. The exhibition is co-funded by the European Union and is part of the Artsformation cooperation project.
The Federal Cultural Foundation has been supporting transmediale as a leading cultural institution since 2004. A complete list of partners and supporters can be found here.
