Songs of Wounding: solidarity concert for Ukraine with Mariana Sadovska, Ganna Gryniva, Viktoria Leléka and others

Wednesday, 23 March 2022, 7 pm, Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg
Admission with requested donation

In cooperation with the Allianz Kulturstiftung and Outernational, the Akademie der Künste is organising an evening of solidarity for Ukraine. Outernational is a new European concert series on the practice of transtraditional music. The centrepiece will be a concert by the Ukrainian singer Mariana Sadovska entitled “Songs of Wounding”. In an extensive research project, the singer and performer has made audio recordings in Ukrainian villages, investigating various singing techniques that have been lost to the collective memory.

Accompanying the musical part, literary and artistic voices from the region and Germany will light a beacon for cross-border solidarity. Among those taking part are the musicians Ganna Gryniva and Viktoria Leléka, the musician and author Yuriy Gurzhy and the playwright Sasha Marianna Salzmann. This will be followed by a discussion between Berlin’s Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer and Esra Küçük of the Board of Trustees of the Allianz Kulturstiftung on the opportunities for funding and supporting artists in exile. Akademie President Jeanine Meerapfel will deliver the welcome address.

Voices on the solidarity event

“Art gives strength and embraces the soul. I really admire the Ukrainian musicians living in Germany along with their German counterparts for how much they are doing right now. Unbelievable how many concerts are being organised impromptu! I call this our musical battalion. We are reaching people here locally, but also sending a signal of strength to those in Ukraine who are living through this horrendous period or who are even on the front lines.” Mariana Sadovska

“Art sustains the memory of cultural identities – the words, music and films tell their tales and preserve the identity of a people. And this is what artists are doing today, raising their voices for peace in Ukraine despite the war and devastation.”
Jeanine Meerapfel, President of the Akademie der Künste

“Putin’s war in Ukraine is increasingly also a war of destruction against the country’s artists and cultural institutions. In cooperation with the European Cultural Foundation, the Allianz Kulturstiftung has therefore launched a European cultural emergency relief programme for Ukraine in the last few days – the Culture of Solidarity Fund for European cultural initiatives that are taking a stand against the destruction of the open and diverse cultural life in Ukraine and that are now acting in solidarity throughout neighbouring countries and across Europe.” Esra Küçük, Managing Member of the Board of Trustees of the Allianz Kulturstiftung

The solidarity concert will raise funds for two initiatives that are providing help locally and for civilians such as journalists who have fled: Ukraine-Hilfe Berlin and n-ost.
