In conjunction with the award of the 2022 Käthe Kollwitz Prize to Nan Goldin, the Akademie der Künste is showing photographs by the artist spanning five decades, providing an overview of the work of the US American photographer and filmmaker. On display are approx. 50 black-and-white and colour photographs taken in Boston, New York, Berlin and Asia, along with recent large-format works including landscapes and “grids”. The exhibition opening will follow the press preview.
The award ceremony will be held on 3 March 2023, with Nan Goldin in attendance. On 5 March 2023, the Akademie der Künste shows Laura Poitras' film All the Beauty and the Bloodshed on Nan Goldin and her campaign against the Sackler pharmaceutical company in a preview.
In honouring Nan Goldin, the Academy is expressing its appreciation of an artist whose work is of key importance for contemporary photography worldwide. The jury, consisting of Academy members Hubertus von Amelunxen, Luc Tuymans and Corinne Wasmuht, has singled out Goldin’s photographs from the environment she lives in and the LGBTQ+ community, praising the way in which she break taboos, overcomes boundaries and advocates acceptance and increasing recognition of the LGBTQ+ scene. The sense of immediacy in Goldin’s work stems from her physical and emotional affinity to, and lack of distance from, a world that is closed to many people and has only been opened up by her as an artist.
Nan Goldin, born in Washington, DC, in 1953, lives and works in New York. She came to Berlin in 1991 at the invitation of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and lived there for four years. Goldin’s work is included in numerous collections around the world. Her retrospective This Will Not End Well at Moderna Museet, Stockholm, is on show until 26 February 2023 and will subsequently move on to the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin and other venues (October 2024 to March 2025). In recent years, her works have been exhibited at various museums, including Tate Modern, London (2019), Château de Versailles, France (2018), the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2017) and the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2016). Goldin has been honoured with numerous awards, including the Centenary Medal of the Royal Photographic Society, London (2018) and the Hasselblad Award (2007); in 2006 she was made Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres in France. She founded the activist group P.A.I.N. (Prescription Addiction Intervention Now) in 2017. The documentary All the Beauty and the Bloodshed by director Laura Poitras on the artist and her campaign against the Sackler pharmaceutical company won the Golden Lion in Venice in 2022. It will be presented in a preview screening on 5 March 2023 at Hanseatenweg 10.
The Käthe Kollwitz Prize, which the Akademie der Künste awards each year to a visual artist, is endowed with 12,000 euros. Previous recipients of the award include Maria Eichhorn (2021), Timm Ulrichs (2020), Hito Steyerl (2019), Adrian Piper (2018) and Katharina Sieverding (2017). The prize and accompanying exhibition and publication are co-financed by the Kreissparkasse Köln, sponsor of the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Köln.
A book is to be published in conjunction with the exhibition for the award at 3 March 2023 with an interview with Nan Goldin by Thora Siemsen.
