POWER SPACE VIOLENCE – Performances, discussions, lectures, readings with Louis Chude-Sokei, Hani Mojtahedy, Nora Sternfeld, Ingo Schulze, Mykola Ridnyi and others

Until 12 July 2023, Pariser Platz and Hanseatenweg

On the occasion of the ongoing exhibition “POWER SPACE VIOLENCE. Planning and Building under National Socialism”, the Akademie der Künste is organising a programme of performances, discussions, lectures and readings dedicated to the artistic examination of the architectural and ideological remains of National Socialism. The programme will run until 12 July 2023.

How can the perception of sound contribute to a reflection on history? With music and lectures, scholar Louis Chude-Sokei, sound artist Yara Mekawei, musician and artist Jan St. Werner, singer Hani Mojtahedy and others explore the echoes of the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg. A discussion on current strategies of the arts in dealing with right-wing violence will be held with director Nuran David Calis, author Özlem Özgül Dündar, visual artist Leon Kahane and the curator and art mediator Nora Sternfeld. With Free Berlin, Brandon LaBelle, Gabu Heindl, the group Organisms Democracy and others address the power politics of urban spaces. In a reading and discussion, Ingo Schulze, Yoko Tawada and Cécile Wajsbrot approach the Schwerbelastungskörper, or “heavy load-bearing body”, a relic of the National Socialist building legacy in Berlin. Using examples of public sculptures, squares and art collections in Berlin and Kyiv, the Ukrainian artists Oleksandr Burlaka, Sasha Kurmaz and Mykola Ridnyi, together with the art historian and curator at the National Art Museum of Kyiv Hanna Aliieva, explore historical narratives of propaganda, colonialism and fascism that reach into the present day.
