EM4 | Berlin Studios for Electroacoustic Music

Concert Series

The programme of the third edition of the EM4 series is designed by the UNI.K | Studio für Klangkunst und Klangforschung and the Sound Studies M.A. programme at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). The evening’s works break with the tradition of music as a linguistic metaphor. The abstract electronic approaches in Iannis Xenakis’s “Orient – Occident“ (1960) and David Behrman’s “Runthrough” (1967, Mark Trayle realisation 1999) contrast with Pauline Oliveros’s “Bye Bye Butterfly”, an early example of a feminist composition which not only deconstructs Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly” but also offers a humorous yet critical commentary on the fate of the title figure. In addition, Kirsten Reese and Martin Supper present the results from the “Elektro Retro” seminar.
