In a foreign world "Palestine in the South" / "Street Shadows"

Film and Talk

Going beyond the daily flood of images that inform our news, the four films selected provide insights into the fates of people who are fleeing their homelands. They allow the past and the present to be reconsidered, yet appear frighteningly and alarmingly close to us.

In cooperation with the Jewish Film Festival Berlin & Brandenburg.

"Palestine in the South", documentary film by Ana Maria Hurtado, Chile 2011, English subtitles, 52 min.
After the fall of Saddam Hussein, thousands of Palestinians residents in Iraq became refugees in a no man's land. The distant republic of Chile welcomed a group of them in La Calera, a small town where hundreds of Palestinians had already arrived a century ago, making this town their children’s home.

"Street Shadows", documentary film by David Fisher, Israel 2015, English subtitles, 50 min.
One short street in southern Tel Aviv - doomed to be a home for refugees ever since it was planned - brings forth a mosaic of characters living in a hallucinatory reality of a cityscape that has its charms, but is not always kind and merciful.

Followed by a talk with David Fisher (in English).
