The new production by the Berlin-based opera company Novoflot OpernCall (“OperaCall”) is a digital-analogue opera installation developed for the glass façade of the Akademie der Künste’s building at Pariser Platz. It takes the form of a three-dimensional transformation of Schönberg’s twelve-tone technique into the public sphere at the Brandenburg Gate. With a libretto derived from texts by Jo Frank and Ulrich Holbein, the installation opens up the perspective of a specially developed site-specific opera format meant to combine direct and indirect theatre experience. The stage design is created by Nina von Mechow. Here, for the first time, the façade of the Akademie der Künste at Pariser Platz becomes part of the theatrical space.

Between opera performance and film, musical-theatrical exhibition and audio walk, scenic exploration and newly composed music, this new hybrid format is staged in fully analogue form inside the Akademie, while it is simultaneously experienced in visual and acoustic form from the outside, with the audience using headphones and watching through the building’s twelve-part glass façade. The project consists of 12 world premieres by the composers Antonis Anissegos, Minas Borboudakis, Caio De Azevedo, Liisa Hirsch, Haris Kittos, Anna Korsun, Dariya Maminova, David Rimsky-Korsakow, Żaneta Rydzewska, Jacopo Salvatori, Tomasz Skweres and Tom B. Smith. In their work, the composers rethink the unfinished third act of Arnold Schönberg’s opera Moses und Aaron.

OpernCall is the second part of the Novoflot project “The Theory of Harmony”, which consists of six stations. Subsequent stations are the Kunstfest Weimar, the Musikfestival Bern and the Kölner Philharmonie in autumn of 2024. More information about the project in its entirety is available at www.novoflot.de

As an independent opera company, the ensemble Novoflot stands for opera events that are staged outside of established forms of presentation. OpernCall is the third collaboration with the Akademie der Künste. In 2013, Novoflot put on a guest production at the Akademie der Künste with a new staging of the futuristic opera Der Sieg über die Sonne by Kasimir Malewitsch. In 2020, they were part of the project “Labor Beethoven” of the Music Section of the Akademie der Künste.
