Notation

An exhibition by the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, and the ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe

“Notation” focuses on the multifaceted range of artistic processes that exists between the concept and the work. Works from all realms of art and dating from 1900 to today are placed in relation to one another: sign systems to do with literature, music, painting, choreography, architecture, photography, film and media art. Approximately 450 artistic approaches by more than 100 artists have been brought together from international collections, the ZKM | Karlsruhe and the archives of the Akademie der Künste.
By linking scientific calculation and artistic form, 20th century artists were in a position to render new realities visible. Modernism rediscovered the spiritual side of existence, immaterial phenomena, the ephemeral – morphic resonances, serial structures and sound waves – as a field of research for the arts. Thus the relationship between concept, notation, repetition and work was radically redefined; resulting in the draft processes themselves becoming autonomous artworks. These are now the main focus of the exhibition curated by the image-theorist Hubertus von Amelunxen, the artist Dieter Appelt and the media artist Peter Weibel. The exhibition was developed in collaboration with Angela Lammert from the Akademie der Künste, and Bernhard Serexhe from the ZKM | Karlsruhe.
The exhibition in Berlin will be accompanied by conferences, film screenings and guided tours as well as a comprehensive catalogue edited by Dieter Appelt, Hubertus von Amelunxen and Peter Weibel.
