Wo kommen wir hin
Special Events in the Music Section

Talks and music on 21 and 24 March, and on 12 April 2019,
Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg

As part of the artistic research laboratory “Wo kommen wir hin” (Where are We Headed?), the Music Section at the Akademie der Künste is inviting the public to special events. Free International Drumming III on 21 March puts the accent on Drumming as one of the most practised musical and ritual forms of expression worldwide, shaped by regional influences, but comprehensible on a global scale. It is precisely this group of instruments in all their diversity that are predestined to incorporate and transform the impulses of different worlds, as is characteristic of the drumming of Robyn Schulkowsky and Manos Tsangaris. They assess the reality and future of their long-standing “conversation with drums” once again. Followed by a discussion with other participants in “Wo kommen wir hin”.

On 24 March the focus is on the specific characteristics of the various genres of art that concretise and shape social reality. Are their tool boxes therefore political or where does the political element in art begin? And in what way does music, which on the one hand is ascribed affective qualities and on the other largely reflects and shapes reality, fit in here? Composers Helmut Lachenmann and Manos Tsangaris, members of the Akademie der Künste, discuss the current situation of contemporary compositions in this interplay.

On 12 April the special event ... und immerzu draws attention to the question of individual spiritual or religious practice in the works of Mark Andre. The extent to which this principle can even be explained and why it always remains latently hidden are questions the two composers and members of the Music Section, Mark Andre and Manos Tsangaris, will try to fathom on this evening. The cellist Adele Bitter will play Mark Andre's piece E.
