Werner Düttmann – thinking about architecture
Book premiere on 28 October with Natascha Paulick
Werner Düttmann (1921 – 1983) is undoubtedly one of the foremost architects of Berlin’s post-war modernism – but he is also more than remarkable as an author of speeches and writings. So far largely unknown and unpublished are above all his numerous notes and diary-like entries, which can be found in his estate at the Akademie der Künste.
To round off the year of his centenary in 2021, the Akademie der Künste is issuing for the first time a compilation of major writings and speeches by its former president. The book Werner Düttmann. Nachdenken über Architektur, which presents the urban planner and architect as a writer and thinker, is now being published by Wasmuth & Zohlen. Düttmann was a humorous and astute observer, thoughtful and far-sighted. Unconventional in his style and lines of thought, his texts read like highly topical, pertinent contributions to the architectural and urban planning debates still in progress today.
In a reading on 28 October 2021 with Natascha Paulick at BHROX bauhaus reuse, on the central island of Ernst-Reuter-Platz, the new publication will be presented to the public. As the granddaughter of the architect Richard Paulick, the actress also has a personal interest in preserving and publicising the architectural heritage of the two Berlins of the post-war period. The book presentation is part of the opening event for the exhibition “BERLIN IST VIELE STÄDTE. Der Architekt und Stadtplaner Werner Düttmann” (until 26 November 2021) by Berlin University of the Arts – Department of History and Theory of Architecture and BHROX bauhaus reuse.
