Hanns Schimansky – Linienwärts
Exhibition Opening on 17 June in Rheinsberg

Each year the Visual Arts Section at the Akademie der Künste introduces the oeuvre of one of its members at the Kurt Tucholsky Literaturmuseum in Rheinsberg Palace. This year’s exhibition is dedicated to Hanns Schimansky and shows a cross-section of his works. The exhibition opens on Saturday, 17 June 2017, at 11 am, and will be on view until 10 September.

Hanns Schimansky is an exceptional contemporary German draftsman. He works with graphite, oil pastels, pencil or gouache on paper. This surface not only acts as a support for his drawings, but often incorporates a series of folds that affect the perception of the graphic process. Thwarting the viewer’s freedom to form their own perceptions from visual impressions, he offers his version of what is to be experienced and visible. And it is anything but abstract.

Hanns Schimansky (b. 1949 in Bitterfeld) lives and works in Berlin. He began his studies in Rostock, taking a degree in agricultural science. In 1977-80 Schimansky received a scholarship as a master student with Gerhard Kettner at the Akademie der Künste of the GDR in Berlin. In the 1990s he also received grants from the Kunstring Folkwang, Essen, the Stiftung Kulturfonds, Berlin, and the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris. In 1985 Hanns Schimansky was awarded the Wilhelm Höpfner Preis by the Winkelmann-Gesellschaft, Stendal; in 1996 the graphic arts prize of the Kunstmesse Dresden; in 2001 the Felix-Hollenberg-Preis for etching, Albstadt; and in 2012 the Hans Theo Richter Preis of the Sächsische Akademie der Künste, Dresden. From 1998-2014 he was professor at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee. Schimansky has been a member of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin since 1997.
