In her Academy Dialogue series, Akademie president Jeanine Meerapfel talks with cultural theorists Christina von Braun and Liliana Ruth Feierstein about what gender has to do with art, politics and religion.
The occasion is Christina von Braun's recently published book Geschlecht. Eine persönliche und eine politische Geschichte (Propyläen Verlag, Berlin). How does personal background influence gender constructions? How does gender affect artistic languages, themes and attitudes?

Christina von Braun has made about 50 film documentaries and written numerous books and essays on cultural history topics. In 1994 she was appointed to the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. She was the founding director and long-time head of the first Gender Studies programme in Germany and is a Senior Research Fellow of the Selma Stern Centre for Jewish Studies in Berlin-Brandenburg. In 2013 Christina von Braun was awarded the Sigmund Freud Culture Prize. Her Stille Post. Eine andere Familiengeschichte (2020) and in early March this year Geschlecht. Eine persönliche und eine politische Geschichte were published by Propyläen Verlag. Recently published podcasts can be found on zeit.de and rbb-online.de.

Liliana Ruth Feierstein studied in Buenos Aires, Vancouver and Mexico City. In 2007, she completed her PhD in philosophy at the Heinrich Heine University of Düsseldorf. Her dissertation was awarded the Augsburger Wissenschaftspreis für Interkulturelle Studien. She has been a postdoctoral fellow of the European Research Council and a fellow at the Seminario Rabínico Latinoamericano in Buenos Aires. From October 2014 to April 2017 she was a junior professor and since May 2017 has been professor of the Transcultural History of Judaism at the Institute for Cultural Studies at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Her research focuses on Jewish culture, history and literature in Latin-speaking countries (in Latin America above all) and theories of the diaspora.

Jeanine Meerapfel has been president of the Akademie der Künste since 2015. The filmmaker and screenwriter has made numerous award-winning documentaries and feature films, including the documentary Im Land meiner Eltern (1981) and the feature film Der deutsche Freund (2012). From 1990 to 2008 she taught film directing at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. In films such as La Amiga and Annas Sommer, she has focused on strong, engaged women. She is currently completing the cinematic essay Eine Frau, which traces a personal biography and addresses such themes as emigration, remembering and forgetting.

In the Academy Dialogue series, Jeanine Meerapfel has been holding in-depth discussions with one or two distinguished personalities from the fields of art, science, government and cultural policy since 2017. Among her previous guests have been historian and prejudice researcher Wolfgang Benz, Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters, Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer, and the authors Deborah Feldman and Max Czollek.
