Theatre director Nele Hertling and her tireless commitment to the arts and to the promotion of culture will be honoured at an evening event, marking the publication of Into the Open. Nele Hertling - New Spaces fort he Arts. Hertling played an extraordinary, if not unparalleled, role in shaping the development of the arts in Berlin and Germany in the post-war years through the international collaborations she established. Over a period of more than 60 years, she has not only created a unique network for dance, theatre and music – primarily at the Akademie der Künste and the Hebbel Theatre (HAU), which she founded – but also launched cultural-political initiatives such as “A Soul for Europe”.

Hortensia Völckers will talk with Nele Hertling about new spaces for art. The HAU’s current artistic director Annemie Vanackere and Matthias Lilienthal, one of her predecessors in the role, will discuss with Hertling how the Hebbel should be seen as a model for the future. Kathrin Deventer, Nicolas Bertrand and Mahir Namur will talk about the initiative “A Soul for Europe”, while Edith Clever will read from Die Marquise von O (The Marquise of O) and Cesc Gelabert will dance an excerpt from Der goldene Schnitt. Jazz pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach will perform on the grand piano.

Nele Hertling (born in Berlin in 1934) lives in Berlin. She joined the Akademie der Künste in 1962, working as a secretary in the departments of music and performing arts. In 1989 she founded “Tanz im August” and the Hebbel Theatre in Berlin (where she was artistic director until 2003). She has been a member of the Performing Arts Section at the Akademie der Künste since 1998 and was deputy director of the section between 2001 and 2006. She was vice president of the Academy from 2006 to 2015. Since 2017 is director of the Performing Arts Section.
