The current political, cultural, economic and social upheavals – not to mention the climate crisis and the pandemic – reverberate within the Akademie der Künste. Uncertainties are increasing, correlations are often hard to recognise. During the general assembly of the Akademie der Künste, members and their guests will discuss their thoughts and questions about the times.

A public discussion is planned as a format to address current debates, catastrophes and the many wars and conflicts taking place around the world and in Europe. The aim is to enable participants to talk and listen without prejudice, and to address and tolerate opposing positions and contradictions. The encounter is meant to foster and encourage the practice of mutual trust.
This event picks up on the tradition of the Akademie der Künste’s “Berliner Begegnungen zur Friedensförderung”, which took place in the early 1980s. In 1981, at the initiative of essayist and poet Stephan Hermlin, the East German Akademie der Künste invited some 100 writers, artists and scholars from East and West Germany and other European countries to discuss the threat to peace in East and West. In 1983, members of the Literature Section of the Akademie der Künste in West Berlin, including Günter Grass, Walter Höllerer and Uwe Johnson, organised the Second Berlin Encounter.
The Third Berlin Encounter was initiated by Akademie members Thomas Heise and Helke Misselwitz (Directors of the Film and Media Arts Section) and Nele Hertling (Director of the Performing Arts Section).
