Adolf Hitler was appointed Reich Chancellor on 30 January 1933. The Nazis marked the occasion by staging a torchlight parade that passed through the Brandenburg Gate. On the anniversary of this day, Academy President Jeanine Meerapfel will talk with sociologist Natan Sznaider, who teaches in Tel Aviv, and media scholar Lea Wohl von Haselberg about the relationship between antisemitism, criticism of Israel and racism, about opposing world views and the dangers posed by political rhetoric.

The discussion will centre on Sznaider’s Buch Fluchtpunkte der Erinnerung: Über die Gegenwart von Holocaust und Kolonialismus (2022), which anchors this debate in a larger historical and sociological context. One of the key issues here is the question “Is it possible to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust and colonialism without relativising history?"

Natan Sznaider has been professor of sociology at the Academic College of Tel Aviv-Yaffo since 1994. His recent publications include: Gesellschaften in Israel: Eine Einführung in zehn Bildern (2017), Neuer Antisemitismus? Fortsetzung einer globalen Debatte (2019, edited together with Christian Heilbronn and Doron Rabinovici) and Politik des Mitgefühls: Die Vermarktung der Gefühle in der Demokratie (2021).

Lea Wohl von Haselberg is a film and media scholar. She did her PhD in Hamburg and Haifa, with a dissertation on Jewish characters in West German film and television. She conducts research and teaches at the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF. Her work focuses on the representation of Jewish issues in German discourses, Jewish film history and (audiovisual) cultures of remembrance. She is also a member of the programme collective for the Jewish Film Festival Berlin | Brandenburg (JFBB).

Jeanine Meerapfel has been president of the Akademie der Künste since 2015. The filmmaker and screenwriter has made a number of award-winning documentaries and features, including the documentary Im Land meiner Eltern (In the Country of My Parents, 1981) and the feature film The German Friend, 2012. Her film essay A Woman tackles themes like emigration and remembering and forgetting. It was shown at numerous international film festivals in 2022 and had its theatrical release in December.

In the Academy Dialogue series, which began in 2017, Jeanine Meerapfel leads intensive discussions with one or two prominent figures from the fields of art, science and politics. One focus of the series is on the topic of antisemitism.
