The transmediale Festival 2023 at the Akademie der Künste on Hanseatenweg

Festival: 1–5 February 2023 | Exhibition: 1–26 February 2023
Opening: Wednesday 1 February 2023, 7 pm
Press conference: 31 January 2023, 11 am | Registration: press@transmediale.de

The transmediale festival and accompanying exhibition will be staged once again at the Akademie der Künste building on Hanseatenweg. Titled “a model, a map, a fiction”, the festival explores scaling technologies and the ways they are propagated and instrumentalised. This year’s transmediale has been curated by Nora O’ Murchú (artistic director of transmediale), Bani Brusadin, Ben Evans James, Elise Misao Hunchuck and Lorena Juan with curatorial input from Jussi Parikka. The press conference for the festival is being held on 31 January 2023 at 11 am.

The festival kicks off with the opening on 1 February: an evening of artistic interventions, performance and music with free admission. This will be followed by a four-day discursive programme with talks, panel discussions, lectures, performances, demos and workshops as well as a series of short films. This programme can also be followed on the festival website via an online stream. transmediale brings together more than eighty international artists, researchers, performers and thinkers who address the themes of the festival from the perspective of different disciplines. As an adjunct to this, artistic interventions reflecting ideas of scalability will be installed in the Academy building. Presented in partnership with the CTM Festival, the evening programme includes two performances by Academy member Jennifer Walshe with Jon Leidecker (3 Feb. and 5 Feb.). The programme is complemented by the exhibition Out of Scale, which shows in locations across the city.

The transmediale exhibition Or So It Seems will be on display until 26 February at the Akademie der Künste. Alan Butler and Simone C Niquille’s large-format video works examine the technical and sociopolitical implications of computer vision.

transmediale 2023 is a project mounted by transmediale e. V. at the Akademie der Künste. The transmediale festival has been funded since 2004 by the Federal Cultural Foundation.
