Pariser Platz Venue

The Akademie building at Pariser Platz is accessible by public transportation. To make it easier for visitors with disabilities to access this location, we recommend using the VBB bus and train assistance service provided by Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg.

There are two parking spaces for people with disabilities directly in front of the building. The distance from there to the Akademie der Künste’s main entrance is about 30 m. The route to the entrance is easily navigable. The surface varies between concrete slabs and small, slightly uneven cobblestones.

There are still no automatic entrance doors. However, reception personnel are aware of the situation and can provide assistance if required. If you encounter any problems, you can contact the reception personnel by phone:  030 200 57 1000; or anmeldungpp@adk.de.

The entrance lobby is accessible at ground level, although a floor incline of some 5 % needs to be negotiated to reach the reception desk and the exhibition halls. All passageways are at least 90 cm wide. The ticket sales counter is right at the reception desk. The reception desk is 120 cm high at its lowest point. The café is located on the left, with the Akademie’s bookshop on the right behind the reception desk.

Wheelchairs, walking aids and pushchairs can be left (unattended) in front of the entrance to the exhibition halls or next to the ticket desk. Wheelchairs and portable folding stools may be borrowed (please enquire at the reception desk). Pushchairs are not always permitted in the exhibitions – please check the current situation before your visit.

The exhibition halls, café, and bookshop are located on the ground floor and are accessible at ground level. There are two lifts providing access to the Event Hall (Plenary Hall), the Reading Room (Library and Architectural Archives) and the upper exhibition area (Sculpture Garden). The larger lift has an area of 230 x 200 cm, with an entrance width of 200 cm. The smaller lift has an area of 160 x 200 cm, with an entrance width of 120 cm. There is a large open area on each floor in front of the lifts.

The Reading Room is located on the first upper level. Visitors cannot open the door themselves from the outside. To be admitted to the room, one needs to catch the eye of the Reading Room staff. Please register in advance for access to the Reading Room: lesesaalpariserplatz@adk.de. The counter in the Reading Room is 68 cm high. The desks are 69 cm high, allowing a wheelchair to fit under them.

The Event Hall (Plenary Hall) is located on the second upper level. There are two spaces provided for wheelchair users along with companion seats.

The Picture Cellar does not have barrier-free access and can only be reached via a staircase on the ground floor.

The gallery/bridge, which is used, for example, for workshops and other events organised by the KUNSTWELTEN Education Programme, can also only be reached via a staircase. The bridge is about 4 m wide.

Accessible toilets can be found on basement level 1, basement level 3 (Black Box) and the second floor (Plenary Hall).

Women’s restroom on basement level 1 and the second upper floor (2.OG):
Inside, there is a 200 x 120 cm area providing space for manoeuvring in front of the toilet, with 200 x 200 cm available outside. There is a space of 100 cm next to the toilet on the left, along with a folding grab rail. The sink is wheelchair-accessible. The mirror is visible from a sitting position. There is an alarm trigger with a display and acoustics inside the toilet cubicle. On basement level 1, access to the toilet via the hallway is rather more confined (200 x 120 cm).

Women’s restroom on basement level 3:
Inside, there is a 200 x 200 cm area providing space for manoeuvring in front of the toilet, with 120 x 120 cm available outside. Behind the door (inside the cubicle), there is a space of 200 x 120 cm in which to move. There is a space of 100 cm next to the toilet on both the left and right sides, along with folding grab rails on either side of the toilet. The sink is wheelchair-accessible. The mirror is visible from a sitting position. There is an alarm trigger with a display and acoustics inside the toilet cubicle.

Men’s restroom on basement level 1:
Inside and outside, there is a 200 x 200 cm area providing space for manoeuvring in front of the toilet. Behind the door (inside the cubicle), there is a space of 200 x 120 cm in which to move. There is a space of 100 cm next to the toilet on both the left and right sides, along with folding grab rails on either side of the toilet. The sink is wheelchair-accessible. The mirror is visible from a sitting position. There is an alarm trigger with a display and acoustics inside the toilet cubicle.

Visitors without wheelchairs are charged 50 cents to use the toilet on basement level 1; it is free for wheelchair users and people with pushchairs. Pressing the bell button on the glass door in front of the entrance to the toilet will notify reception. A member of staff will then open the swivel-mounted glass door by pressing a button at the reception desk, allowing people to pass through.
