In the exhibition “NOTHINGTOSEENESS – Void/White/Silence”, the Akademie der Künste shows works by 75 international artists whose work centres around monochromy, material minimalism and reduction. The title refers to a word play by John Cage, who coined the term “nothingtoseeness” as the equivalent of silence in the visual arts. The exhibited works include paintings, photo series, site-specific installations, videos, film and sound pieces, as well as sculptures. The exhibition opens on 15 September 2021 as part of Berlin Art Week.

The point of departure is the white monochromy and the associated new meaning of the material surface, which caused a stir in the American and European art scenes of the 1950s and 1960s, and the corresponding new artistic-aesthetic practices that are still relevant today. Early radical statements are placed in relation to contemporary works; the show brings together artists such as Yves Klein, Karin Sander, Isaac Julien, Thomas Rentmeister, Lucio Fontana, Bruce Nauman, Maria Eichhorn, Pierre Huyghe, Katharina Fritsch, Max Dax, John Cage, Ellsworth Kelly, Gregor Schneider, Ray Johnson, Yoko Ono, Rutherford Chang, Stephan Huber, Rosa Barba and Katharina Grosse.

The exhibition invites the viewer to partake in a more precise and intensive mode of perception, and to experience the artwork live in all of its facets. Discussions, concerts, readings and film screenings will accompany the exhibition, with references made to relevant aspects of literature, music and architecture.
