World premiere of Wassily Kandinsky’s Über die Mauer
Arila Siegert presents her scenic realisation of the stage composition with the artist group Violett at the Akademie der Künste
1 to 3 October 2021, Akademie der Künste, Pariser Platz
With the artist group Violett, the director and choreographer Arila Siegert is undertaking the first scenic realisation of Wassily Kandinsky’s stage composition Über die Mauer of 1913/14. It is being staged as part of the Akademie’s focus on “Arbeit am Gedächtnis – Transforming Archives” as a co-production of the Akademie der Künste with the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau and the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.
Über die Mauer is Wassily Kandinsky’s playful exploration of his theory of the Gesamtkunstwerk. Preoccupied with it from about 1908, he thought of it as an interplay of the various arts on equal terms without their merging. In Über die Mauer, he added to his ideas an important component: the viewer, the listener. In a fictitious, art-transcending dialogue between the artists and their audience, he calls on the latter to listen and look closely; to be open, empathetic and curious and to free the “soul” from the walls surrounding it.
In her engagement with Kandinsky, Arila Siegert seeks to open up an experimental space in which the participants find a common form out of freely unfolding sense perception. After Der gelbe Klang (1993) and Violett (2019), Über die Mauer is Siegert’s third production of one of his stage compositions; the two earlier ones came about at the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau. The artist group Violett (comprising artists from drama, music, the visual arts and dance) emerged as a free formation from this project.
