2023 Berlin Art Prize – Grand Prize awarded to Joachim Trier

Next Saturday, 18 March, Norwegian film director and screenwriter Joachim Trier will be presented with the Berlin Art Prize – Grand Prize 2023. Acting on behalf of Land Berlin, the Akademie der Künste awards the prize with its 15,000-euro endowment in each of its six sections in rotation. The welcoming addresses will be given by Klaus Lederer, Senator for Culture and Europe, and Jeanine Meerapfel, President of the Akademie der Künste. The evening will be hosted by Thomas Heise and Helke Misselwitz, the director and deputy director respectively of the Film and Media Arts Section. The encomium for the prize-winner, which was written by Christian Petzold, will be read out by Zsuzsanna Kiràly, who sat on the jury for the Grand Prize together with Bettina Böhler and Christian Petzold. The event will be held at Pariser Platz, starting at 7 pm.

The other six art prizes, each worth 5,000 euros, are to be awarded to Petrit Halilaj (Visual Arts), Chinese architect Xu Tiantian (Architecture), British composer Joanna Bailie (Music), Serbian author Barbi Marković (Literature), actor, director and theatre-maker Marcel Kohler (Performing Arts) and French film editor Nelly Quettier (Film and Media Arts).

The Berlin Art Prize – Jubilee Endowment 1848/1948 was established by the city's magistrate to commemorate the March Revolution of 1848. Since 1971 the prize has been awarded by the Akademie der Künste on behalf of Land Berlin.

On Sunday, 19 March, there will be a matinee event with Chinese architect Xu Tiantian, winner of the Art Prize in the Architecture Section. Her congenial combination of social commitment and design quality makes her represents a prototype for the future of contemporary architecture.
