LECTURE DEMONSTRATION
Duration in Bronx Gothic – Acts of Appearance and Disappearance

Okwui Okpokwasili (Performance Artist, New York City, USA)

In Bronx Gothic the first 30 minutes of the performance was a durational act of shaking/quaking, which served to underline and critique notions of the virtuosic black body in performance. The audience and performer were trapped in a spectacle of intimacy, which included stark moments of looking at one another. The question throughout Bronx Gothic was how to trouble the relationship of audience to performer, and destabilize the direction of the “gaze." In this lecture demonstration, Okwui Okpokwasili will continue to explore how looking is an act of appearance and disappearance.
