“Heiner Müller was important for my work because I was enormously inspired by his so different way of thinking and because I could always remain autonomous as an artist when working with him,” is how the Austrian stage designer Erich Wonder remembers his collaborative theatre work with the playwright Heiner Müller. From their first meeting in 1977 at the playhouse in Frankfurt am Main until Heiner Müller’s death in 1995, this artistic friendship was to last and bring forth legendary productions. Der Auftrag (Schauspielhaus Bochum, 1982), Der Lohndrücker (Deutsches Theater Berlin, 1988), Hamlet/Maschine (Deutsches Theater Berlin, 1990) and Tristan und Isolde (Bayreuth Festival, 1993) set standards because they reflected, in an aesthetically breathtaking way, political developments in both divided and reunified Germany.

The exhibition renders visible the way Heiner Müller and Erich Wonder collaborated. It presents, largely for the first time, paintings and large-format watercolours by Erich Wonder, texts by Heiner Müller, photographs by Sibylle Bergemann, costumes by Yohji Yamamoto and film excerpts from productions. The exhibition is taking place to mark the acquisition of Erich Wonder’s archive by the Akademie der Künste, which has also been preserving Heiner Müller’s literary estate since 1998.
