Candice Breitz: Never Ending Stories

Lecture

In her talk, the visual artist Candice Breitz presents her new installation “Digest”, which addresses questions on gender, power and proto-feminist survival strategies. Digest consists of 1,001 sealed video cassettes, the covers of which have been painted black except for one verb from the respective film title that is still visible. The contents of the videotapes will remain concealed forever. The work examines the fragility of the social body, the withdrawal from the physical space (also with regard to the Covid-19 pandemic) and the erosion of collective viewing experiences.

Candice Breitz is a Berlin-based South African artist. She has held a professorship at the HBK Braunschweig since 2007. In recent years, solo exhibitions of her work have been hosted by the Kunstmuseum Bonn, Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Kunsthaus Bregenz, The Power Plant (Toronto), Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Humlebak), Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Arken Museum of Modern Art (Copenhagen) and Baltimore Museum of Arts. She has been a member of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, since 2019.
