Children in Exile
Student Workshop
Together with Edzard Reuter, Jeanine Meerapfel, President of the Akademie der Künste, is launching the Children in Exile programme with Berlin school children. In this programme, Akademie artists recount and reflect on their own experiences of exile, encourage students to carry out their own research into the Akademie Archive papers written in exile, and develop joint projects on exile today. A parallel documentary exhibition, scheduled to open in June 2016, focuses on the children of those artists in exile from 1933–45 whose papers and estates are in the Akademie Archive. The exhibition also includes the experience of participating artists and students today. To start the project, elementary and grammar school pupils, including pupils from preparatory classes for refugee and migrant children, present the initial workshop results which show immigration as both a challenge and enrichment.
