Open Monument Day

Architecture Tours

This year’s Open Monument Day (European Heritage Days) on 11 September 2016 takes the motto “Preserving heritage together”, and is thus dedicated to concerted action.

For 56 years now, the Akademie der Künste in the Hansaviertel, constructed in 1960 and designed by Werner Düttmann, has been used by the Akademie members and staff. Every year, thousands of guests come here to visit exhibitions and events, and in doing so, they all contribute to preserving this heritage building as well. After the refurbishment and the structure’s energy rehabilitation from 2010–2011, the gardens, originally laid out by Walter Rossow in 1960, are now being carefully restored as is, this year, the forecourt at Hanseatenweg.

In two architectural tours, Carolin Schönemann, the Secretary of the Architecture Section, not only offers an insight into the building and gardens, but also into the history of the Akademie der Künste.
