Fortsetzung folgt! 150 Jahre Verein der Berliner Künstlerinnen

Exhibition Opening

In 2017, the Verein der Berliner Künstlerinnen 1867 e.V. (Association of Berlin Women Artists), is celebrating its 150th anniversary. To mark this event, an exhibition series is presenting the historical and contemporary positions of the Association’s artists in four sections.

To start the series, a rich selection of works by well-known, rediscovered and yet to be discovered artists are returning to a particularly striking location – the rooms of the Association’s former painting and sketching school. It was here that Käthe Kollwitz taught, that Paula Modersohn-Becker studied, and many other outstanding artists acquired the skills for their work. The former Life Drawing and Sketching Hall is showing around 25 artistic positions with over 60 exemplary works dating from when the association was founded until 1945. From public and private collections, these works range from classic state academy styles to art nouveau, expressionism, New Objectivity and socially critical art, and include pieces by women artists defamed and persecuted under the Nazi regime.

The Association’s history and its sketching and drawing school are presented in cooperation with the Akademie der Künste.
