Underground and Improvisation. Composition and Improvisation.
In the beginning this was second nature

Both Manfred Schoof and Alexander von Schlippenbach studied under Bernd Alois Zimmermann in Cologne. As a student, Schlippenbach played in Manfred Schoof's quintet, which was, for example, invited by Zimmermann to participate in the revivals of the premiere production of his opera "Die Soldaten" in Cologne (1965). Besides other productions with Zimmermann, Schoof and von Schlippenbach both had the honour of realizing composition commissions for the Donaueschingen Music Festival. At the same time, they have been key sources of inspiration for European jazz and have greatly influenced its development since the early 1960s.

We will be talking about the early days in Cologne, improvisation and composition.
