Summer Celebration at the Brecht-Haus

Summer Festival

In one of his poems, Bertolt Brecht wrote: “Give up your dream that they will make / An exception in your case. / What your mothers told you / Binds no one.” “Like reality itself”, Brecht went on to explain. His Lesebuch für Städtebewohner (published in English as Readers for Those who Live in Cities) provides the keywords for this year’s summer celebration at the Brecht-Haus. Guided tours through the memorial site and through the Dorotheenstadt Cemetery are offered. The Brecht-Archiv presents documents from its collection under the motto “open archive”. Thomas Heise shows his documentary Städtebewohner (2014), which, making use of Brecht’s poems, tells of the daily lives of young men at a prison in Mexico City. Under the title “Und hängen wir einst zwischen Himmel und Boden” (And Once We Hung between Heaven and Earth), recalling another Brecht poem, dramatic arts students from the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst “Ernst Busch” sing and recite Brecht’s songs and texts (directed by Kerstin Hensel; piano: Annette Wizisla). Food and beverages are available for purchase in the courtyard of the Brecht-Haus from the Weinwirtschaft.

An event of the Literaturforum im Brecht-Haus, the Brecht-Weigel-Gedenkstätte and the Bertolt-Brecht-Archiv.
