What the Body Remembers. Dance Heritage Today Mary Wigman and Asia: Between Orientalism and Transnationalism
Although Mary Wigman never visited Asia, the style of her dance as well as her writing was influenced by encounters with artists on that continent and an exchange about musical instruments and masks. Can her works be associated with Orientalism from a scholarly perspective? Did her teachings have a transnational impact for students from India, Japan and Indonesia, who studied with her and applied what they learned to the development of modern dance throughout Asia?
