Uncertain States The Taste of Risk

Discussion

What does it mean to be born in a colony? Dancer and choreographer Koffi Kôkô describes the dependency on French educational institutions. Against that background, an initiation into the rituals of Voodoo was the strongest form of social and cultural resistance – especially since the colonial power fought, first and foremost, language and rituals.

In the early 1970s, the situation was different for Floros Floridis in Greece. It was the leaden years of the Greek military junta (1967 – 1974) when free jazz’s radical improvisations were the most powerful response to the junta’s cultural policy of populist folklore.

In an unconditional dialogue, Koffi Kôkô and Floros Floridis bring together these artistic reactions to the social policy conditions in their day. In their lecture demonstration, these two protagonists from very different art scenes offer insights into their own unique experiential knowledge. Improvisation and anarchism, resistance and paradox – they stand for an open artistic dialogue beyond political codifications.
